First Person: Maria's Head Start Lesson Experience

14-year-old Maria joined us at the boutique for a Head Start Teen Makeup Lesson: Absolute Beginner option. We asked her what she thought of the experience and how it helped her feel more confident in beauty.

What were you expecting before going for your Head Start lesson?

"I wasn't really sure what to expect, but what I hoped I would learn was how to apply makeup correctly in a natural way, so it wasn’t too noticeable or over the top, and that is exactly what I got!"

Before going to Cosmetics à la Carte, where had you learned about makeup and techniques?

"On social media, particularly TikTok, but I was always aware that makeup companies often sponsored these types of tutorials so they wouldn’t necessarily be suitable for everyone, and that I would end up looking the same as everyone else who had watched it. I wanted something a bit more personal so that I could feel that my look was more designed just for me."

Were you surprised by the products suggested for you?

"They were exactly what I would have chosen for myself, but then my makeup artist really took the time to listen to what I wanted and so the products she chose were perfect for me, and for the look I was hoping to create, a really lovely, natural and fresh look which was suitable for me."

Which product did you like the most?

"The foundation, it was flawless! I was always worried about foundation as no colour seemed to suit me exactly. I had never known a makeup company that would make up your very own colour, which is what I got with my bespoke mix. I also really liked the Rose Dew Moisturiser and Rosewater Tonic. Since starting to use them, my skin feels really soft and well-treated."

Have you been using the techniques you learned?

"My lesson made me realise that the way I had been doing it at home wasn’t making me look my best, so I have definitely been using and practising what I learned. Makeup feels less bewildering. I am less worried about getting it wrong now."

How do you feel that this experienced has helped you?

"It has really built up my confidence. It reduced some of the doubts I had about myself, and my choices, and stopped me from worrying that I looked stupid or over the top when I wore makeup"

Would you recommend the teen start lesson to your friends?

"I already have, they all loved my new look and wanted to know how I did it."

What other Cosmetics à la Carte experiences are you excited to try next?

"I really want to learn how to create a perfect evening party look for special occasions, in particular for my birthday and prom. It would be so nice to know that I will look my very best and that I can make that happen."
